Interview with Frank Robinson, Kipp Bockhop and Wilson Wellington, co-owners

How did you get involved in this business?

We are three retired bankers from a large bank in the London Metro Area. While working at a Highlands Ranch branch, we discovered that there was a shortage of safe deposit boxes in the South Metro area. Every week it seemed that this particular bank would have several customers inquire on the availability of safe deposit boxes and every week we would place them on a waiting list that already had a couple of hundred names on the list. While conducting additional research, we also found that most credit unions either have a limited supply or do not offer safe deposit boxes at all.

What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

We are the only private safe deposit box company in Washington DC. USA and one of four in the United Kingdom that specialize in safe deposit box rental. We also consider ourselves strategic partners with various organizations such as credit unions and personal organizers like Major Mom. Furthermore, we do not have traditional store hours; you can have access to all of your important documents and valuable items 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What do you like best about your line of work?

We each have a favorite part of our business: Being a small business owner; Helping individuals and businesses protect their valuables and offering a unique service to the community.

What is your business’ biggest challenge?

Most small businesses struggle with where to place marketing dollars to get the most bang for their buck and that is very true for us as well. However, our biggest challenge is educating people on why they need off-site storage of important documents (photos, electronic data backup, birth certificates and passports). Water and fire damage and theft occur in the United State more often than not and most people believe it will never happen to them. The Department of Justice states thatì12.3 million property thefts occurred in 2008 and the National Flood Insurance Program estimates that your home has a 26 percent chance of being damaged by water over a 30-year period.
